Demographics of the West Coast States

As shown below, more than one quarter (27.2%) of the population of California was born outside of the U.S. – more than double the foreign-born share of the population in the other West Coast states, or in the nation in its entirety.


Diversity in the national origins of the foreign born population across the West Coast states is pronounced. As shown below, California’s immigrant population is dominated by those born in Latin America, while the immigrant population in Washington has a larger share of Asians, and a higher percentage of people born in Canada, Europe and the Africa/Oceania region. Oregon’s immigrant mix is in-between.
